Potential DANGER in NEW cat litter!

As many of  you already know, I am not a fan of scented cat litter.  Why?  Because it is offensive to
the cat.  The feline sense of smell is 14x stronger than that of a human.  Imagine that!  Now imagine how strong ANY smell in the litter box must be for our cat friends.
So, I could hardly believe it when I saw that Tidy Cat was adding Febreze to their product line to hide odors (or as an incentive to boost sales).     Febreze, a Proctor and Gamble product, has been sold in the US since 1998.  It can be found in candles, diffusers, mist form as well as aerosol spray -and now our cat litter!

Veterinary toxicology experts working for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center consider Febreze fabric freshener products to be non-toxic to pets if used per instructions on the label. But this information was published BEFORE the Febreze/Cat Litter product was introduced.  I am concerned that unsuspecting cat owners will now be subjecting their cats to Febreze.  And this product seems to adhere to the cats coat, which could mean bad news for the cat.

And my experience has shown me that just because a product is NOT TOXIC to  pets, does not mean it is a product that I recommend to USE around  pets.  Any scented product could cause bronchitis in your cat.  But, if you spray Febreze on your couch, your cat has a choice of avoiding the couch.  HOWEVER, if Febreze is in the cat box, you area leaving your cat with NO choice.

Two weeks ago  I saw a patient named Punkin, a little orange girl that is very sweet.  Punkin  suddenly developed a red, inflamed, itchy face and flaming red ear, and the owner was very concerned.    Poor Punkin was very uncomfortable, as you can imagine.  But what I found surprising was how the cat smelled!   Febrezey!!  I asked Punkin's owner to smell her cat.  She agreed, but she told me she does not use Febreze in her house.  Hmm....  But, she did try a new cat litter recently. Hmmm.... Doing some detective work at home, she realized her Tidy Cat was now laced with Febreze.  The smell from the cat litter was so strong, it was sticking to the cats coat.  And Punkin was breathing this in 24/7.  And developing allergic facial itchiness and discomfort.  Within 24 hours of bathing Punkin and removing the offensive Tidy Cat, Punkin was back to normal.

One week later, I examined a senior cat named Elizabeth who was having respiratory symptoms -wheezing, sneezing and coughing.  She had lost her appetite and was mildly dehydrated.  AND she smelled like Febreze! You guessed it,  Elizabeth's owner just bought a new brand of cat litter.  She did not realize that it contained Febreze.   Because Elizabeth was dehydrated, she required medical care to get back on her feet, but happily she is back to normal (and enjoying her new UNSCENTED cat box).

So, watch for this potential danger when you are purchasing cat litter.  In my opinion, unscented cat litter is the only choice for cat litter.  Use regular baking soda at the bottom of the pan if you need odor control.  Scooping daily is the BEST and CHEAPEST odor control.  Cat boxes do not smell if they are clean.  Period.

  1. Hello Dr. Maureen...I saw this TV ad in Canada just this week & thought this was insane to add to cat litter. Common sense should prevail but I bet a lot of people will rush out to get this scented litter.
Your blog post was shared on FB & I came from there to read your entire post!! Thank you for sharing this with cat owners. Hopefully this post will educate those who need to know! And prevent many sick cats!

    1. I was one of those idiots and my cat had a allergic reaction to it and it caused me a pretty penny. I had just changed their litter and one of my cat couldn't breath she was panting so hard, took her to the vet and she had to have shot and a inhaler, she never had any health issue, with I would have read this article before. In case you think I'm nuts I research the all Febreze product and they are not good for people or pets

    2. My elder cat was highly allergic to FreshStep with Febreze. He passed away last week from a respiratory infection, even though I stopped using the product, last year. My Vet said, apparently it had done permanent damage to his lungs & heart. I wish I had only known, years ago. I would have NEVER used this product. Sincerely, One Broken Heart.....

    3. Hello. My 10 yr. old white cat began scratching and digging at her skin. I am old Fresh Step customer (before Febreze) and never had any trouble with that product. With the Febreze addition, strange things began to happen. Along with skin issues my cat exhibited some neurological symptoms like snarling and attacking her tail viciously. This was not hyperthesia (from vet). When I eliminated Febreze laced litter all the symptoms stopped ! I filed complaint with Fresh Step who promptly offered refund on my supply of cat litter. This stuff is dangerous. DO NOT LET YOUR CAT USE IT AND THEN LICK ITS PAWS. It contains something called zinc chloride (bad). I am only glad I eliminated this from my cat's world before more damage was done.

She was also licking her feet. She stopped eating and drinking. My eyes were bothering me and I had to wear a mask to clean the box. I purchased a new liter box and fragrance free liter She still isn't well so taking her to the vet today.

  18. I recently complained about this exact topic to Clorox company. I had zero intention for financial compensation. However, within about 2 weeks of my original complaint, they had sent my issue up the chain to a claims rep for AIG. She is basically trying to shove a $500 “good will gesture” compensation down my throat for me to sign a disclaimer, and go away. It escalated so quickly, without any effort on my part whatsoever….it makes me think Clorox knows that this is a real issue. But since they have a huge chunk of a $9.8billion cat litter market, I’m sure they don’t want to take their product off the shelves. I am very interested to hear if others have had interactions like this with Clorox Co. If so, please reply….I am not signing anything….my statue of liability runs out in 2 years, and I don’t really need their $500 “good will gesture”. I’d rather make sure no other cats suffer in the world due to a careless product.
